Airthings internship program 2024

Maria Mägi

July 4, 2024

Summer has arrived, and so have our interns!

This year, we have welcomed an incredible group of 9 interns who have joined various departments in our Oslo office. These bright minds are currently working across various areas such as software development, social media marketing, data science, and hardware, bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm to our projects. Our internship in Norway offers a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience while contributing to meaningful work. We have been running the internship program for several years now—check out how our highlights from 2022 and 2021.

Our Airthings interns have formed a great team, enjoying their time in the office, as well as after hours. We believe our summer internship program is not only beneficial for gaining work experience, but also for building new friendships and creating lasting memories.

Let’s meet our 2024 summer interns!

Software Interns

Airthings-intern-Jostein-Kleveland

Jostein Kleveland - Platform Team

🎓 MA - Teacher education with informatics and mathematics at NTNU, Trondheim
🏡 Holmestrand, one hour south of Oslo
🕺 Fun fact: I tangled myself into swing dance and acting and have never been the same afterward.

What project are you working on?
We are working on an internal chatbot service that can answer questions based on internal data. This includes fine-tuning an AI model. The goal is that employees and eventually customers can ask the chatbot questions to get better insight into their sensor-data, as well as good explanations for what that data means!

What’s your favorite thing about working at Airthings?
That must be the great atmosphere at the office! I love the relaxed and social working culture of sitting together in an open desk landscape. The coworkers have been very welcoming, and I already feel like part of the Airthings family.

What’s it like working with your team?
It's been great! Currently, I'm working on a team with two of the other interns. As I think we have been on the same wavelength and skill level, it has been easy to cooperate! Our project leaders and buddies have also been very helpful in getting us started. What I appreciate the most is probably the strong gif game they got going in the slack channel always gives me a laugh.

What do you wish to get out of the internship?
Two things mostly! Firstly, I want to become more confident as a developer by getting experience from a real project. Secondly, I want to get insight into everyday life working as a software developer at a company like Airthings.

What’s your dream job?
What is most important for me is to be able to positively contribute to society in some way. I also love to be social and to work with people to achieve things together. My dream job would therefore be working in a team on a project/in a company that I find meaningful and that brings value to ordinary people, or working as a teacher, to help educate the new generations

Airthings-intern-Trond-Qian

Trond Qian - Platform Team

🎓  MA - Informatics: Programming and System Architecture at the University of Oslo
🏡 Oslo, Norway
☕ Fun fact: I can make a really good latte with somewhat good art.

What project are you working on for Airthings?
The Fresh Air Trio (Platforms interns) are working on an AI-chatbot which is based on Amazon Bedrock. The goal of the project is to be able to get meaningful information out of the enormous amount of data in the Airthings AWS database  to curious employees. The project may be expanded to our customers later.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Airthings?
I would have to say the people!

What’s it like working with your team?
Fun, but also meaningful. Being able to build a project together with the other summer interns, while also having guidance from our “mentors” is something on its own.

What do you wish to get out of the internship?
A project that I can proudly stand behind.

What’s your dream job?
To work on projects that have a real impact on people.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Airthings?
The people here are pretty nice and I enjoy working with my team.

What’s it like working with your team?
I get along with the 2 others in my team. Both of them have a software background unlike me and have been very helpful for me to learn from.

What do you wish to get out of the internship?
My main goal is to learn about the software side of a business so that I can have experience in a wider range of fields

What’s your dream job?
I would love to work within the aeronautical or aerospace industry or within microchip design as well.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Airthings?
The people, the lunch, the coffee and the interesting problem we get to work on.

What’s it like working with your team?
I really enjoy it, everyone is helpful and we are really well included as a part of the team.
I am also working in a team with another intern on the project, which is really nice!

What do you wish to get out of the internship?
I want to challenge myself, gain new experience in working with data analysis, and have a fun summer with the other interns:)

What’s your dream job?
Not completely sure, but definitely a job where I challenge my problem-solving skills,
and a place with a good work environment and nice colleagues, like airthings;)

Airthings-intern-Palina-Yermakova

Palina Yermakova

🎓 MA - Electronics Systems Design and Innovation at NTNU, Trondheim
🏡 Belarus, lived in Norway for 10 years.
🖥️ Fun fact: In my free time, I'm building an 8-bit computer on a breadboard.

What project are you working on for Airthings?
I'm working on the Battery Models project. Our goal is to estimate the lifetime of the batteries for different devices, determine if the battery has been changed, and identify which batteries are used, all with the help of machine learning.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Airthings?
One of my favorite things about Airthings is the community. There's always someone you can ask for help or advice. Additionally, there are many social activities outside of working hours that you can join.

What do you wish to get out of the internship?
It's only been two weeks, but I have already gained more than I ever expected. Two of my expectations were to gain experience in the relevant industry and contribute to solving real problems the company faces. Both of them have been fulfilled.

What’s your dream job?
In the future, I want to work in product development or quality assurance.

Hardware Interns

Airthings-intern-Nikolai-Andresen

Nikolai Andersen

🎓 MA - Electronics Systems Design and Innovation at NTNU, Trondheim
🏡 Bergen, Norway.
📺 Fun fact: I have been on the TV show Makta (Power Play).

What project are you working on for Airthings?
One of my projects is to create a rig for testing the spatial radiation pattern of our products and characterizing them. I also work with a partner to design various printed circuit boards and much more.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Airthings?
Airthings has a great workplace environment that treats everyone equally. The relatively small size of the company creates a strong sense of belonging and shared goals. Plus, the amazing cafeteria and free ice cream are fantastic perks.

What’s it like working with your team?
My team was very helpful when I first started, making me feel at home right away. It's a very good team with a lot of experience, and I learn from them every day.

What do you wish to get out of the internship?
I have used different programs in my free time before, so learning industry standards for using the company’s program has been very helpful. Getting to know the company has been fun, especially since there aren't many companies in Norway that create commercial products for household customers.

What’s your dream job?
My dream job would be getting stranded on a desert island with all the tools and materials I need to use my engineering skills to build a paradise.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Airthings?
There's honestly so much to love: Everything from the nice offices, the lunch and office dogs, to helpful colleagues and generally a healthy work environment between employees. As an intern, my favorite thing must be the fact that I get responsibility, great supervisors and an opportunity to work on a real project where I can learn, but also contribute. The fact that the company is growing, and us interns got thrown straight into everything that is happening inside of the walls also creates a lot of excitement.

What’s it like working with your team?
It's great! The team is young, but knowledgeable, and always helps me out if I'm stuck. We got our own little room on the office floor, with the office dog "Kanelbolle", which creates a pretty comfortable atmosphere.

What do you wish to get out of the internship?
Experience, both related to my studies, but also in working for an employer or a
