The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 goals adopted by all UN member states. It provides a shared framework and a call to action for peace and prosperity for people and the planet by 2030. These goals serve as a holistic perspective on the responsibility we inherit from the future generations of living beings and the ecosystem so they can meet their own needs.
Through a self-assessment, we have found impacts in each of the SDGs in our value chain and the way we work, but we have prioritized 6 SDGs that sum up these interconnections:
We empower people to take control of their air quality ensuring a healthy lifestyle.
As part of our mission to ensure people take control of their air quality, we recognize the importance of educating everyone about what is in the air they breathe.
We are very proud of our diverse team with over 20 nationalities and counting and we treat everyone equally.
We use innovation as the essence of Airthings to improve the health and productivity of urban communities.
We want to improve our unsustainable practices in our value chain by developing an innovative business model you feel proud of.
We are looking at our products life cycle, to take actions to decrease our GHG impacts, but also our products save 15% of energy in buildings.
We are facing a climate and social emergency, and our industry sector has a large role in this. Through the supply chain, there are several challenges to tackle, from demanding responsible sustainable mining sources, through our energy consumption in our data centers, all the way to the end of life of the product and consequences of e-waste. We are currently in an assessment process of our value chain, to improve our unsustainable practices.
The big questions to answer are, how do we close the loop of our linear model? How do we ensure human rights in our supply chain? How do we mitigate our environmental impact, with a special focus on our C02 emissions through our supply chain?
We have been working on creating indoor air quality sensors to empower the world to breathe better, focusing on people's health and wellbeing while improving air contaminants. Therefore Airthings is driven with sustainability in mind and we care about making a difference for both people and the environment.
Health:
Airthings radon and indoor air quality monitors help in preventing lung cancer, avoiding asthma triggering, and defending against virus transmission. We also focus on data for a healthier lifestyle to boost concentration, productivity, and sick absenteeism for education centers and businesses.
Climate change:
We help optimize energy consumption from the building by making them smarter in their interaction with indoor air quality. We tackle directly to the 17% of CO2 emissions caused by buildings around the world by decreasing 5% - 20% of the energy consumption of buildings, this is like taking out of the road over a 100 cars a year per building.
Why is Global Warming causing Climate Change?
Global Warming is similar to a fever. A human fever is 1.5C above our normal body temperature. We sweat, get chills, headaches, and more. This is exactly what is happening to our planet with our current patterns of linear consumption and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions (Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide), the sea levels will rise, ice caps will melt, biodiversity will collapse, and oceans will get even warmer, creating an unbalanced ecological system making an extreme change to our climate.
How many tonnes of CO2 do we emit each year?
In 1950 the world emitted just over 5 billion tonnes of (CO2) – about the same as the US, or half of China’s annual emissions today. By 1990 this had quadrupled to 22 billion tonnes. Emissions have continued to grow rapidly; we now emit over 36 billion tonnes each year
Where do these CO2 emissions come from?
73% of the world's CO2 emissions come from energy use:
In the European Union buildings are responsible for 40% of Europe’s energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions
Does the internet have direct GHG emissions?
According to a study by the Boston Consulting Group, the internet is responsible for roughly one billion tonnes of greenhouse gases a year, or around two percent of world emissions
How much Plastic is wasted every year by the world?
Today, we produce about 300 million tonnes of plastic waste every year. That’s nearly equivalent to the weight of the entire human population
Is Indoor Air quality a potential health problem?
Indoor air pollution is responsible for 1.6 million premature deaths each year in developing countries (probably link to all the data for the indoor contaminants)
The WHO calls indoor air pollution “the world’s largest single environmental health risk”
How does radon affect our lives?
21,000 people in the US and 20,000 in the EU die from radon-related lung cancer every year
Radon is 10x more dangerous for children
