Municipality buys 1000 indoor air quality monitors for public buildings

“We are responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy environment in our buildings. We have therefore signed an agreement with Atea and Airthings to purchase IoT sensors that will measure the indoor climate in all our public buildings,” said property manager in Nordre Follo municipality, Hogne Haug.

The contract with Nordre Follo municipality is a large contract for Airthings as more than 1000 monitors will be installed in a total of 150 buildings ranging from schools and kindergartens to office buildings and nursing homes. The sensors measure radon, CO₂, particulate matter (PM), temperature and humidity, as well as the concentration of volatile organic compounds in the air indoors (VOC). 

The full roll-out of the monitors will take a couple years and will be carried out by one of Airthings’ partners, Atea Norway. The contract has a total value of up to NOK 4 million.

“This is a significant contract for Airthings, as we’ve now added another municipality to our portfolio and strengthened our position in the public sector,” said Øyvind Birkenes, CEO of Airthings.

Nordre Follo municipality is not the first municipality to implement measures to better control the indoor climate in its own buildings. Other municipalities in Norway such as Hamar, Stange, Sunndal, Haugesund and Hemsedal have already installed the Airthings for Business solution in many of their public buildings.

“In total, we now have 75 Norwegian municipalities that use Airthings for Business, and our Airthings for Business solution is also used in about 20 countries around the world. We see a positive trend where more and more people use the technology in most, if not all of their buildings, which is of course a great development,” said Birkenes.

By gaining better control of the indoor climate, Nordre Follo also gains significantly better control over the buildings' energy use. The Airthings monitors indicate occupancy of rooms and buildings, which is an important contribution to the municipality's work to reduce its energy costs.

“We prioritize optimizing the indoor climate in our buildings and are pleased to have a procurement agreement in place where we can use indoor air quality monitors in our public buildings, such as schools, kindergartens, nursing homes and administration buildings. This could help to meet regulatory requirements with regard to radon measurements and map other indoor climate factors, especially air quality. This is important for all individuals residing in the building, especially children and young people in learning environments. The fact that it is a Norwegian-developed product that will contribute to more efficient operation and management of our buildings is also something we value”, said Haug.
